In the latest episode of our MAD//Pod, Yahoo's UK Managing Director, Steve McHenry tells us the challenges about being part of a big global brand, but with a local start-up mentality.
In the latest episode of the MAD//Pod Michaela Hallam from Fresh Air sits down with Steve McHenry, Managing Director of Yahoo UK, for a candid conversation about the brand's evolution and its bold, new direction. McHenry, or "Maka" as he's known in the office, describes his leadership style as "laid back," outlineing a culture where employees can be their authentic selves. "We’ve created an environment where people can try to be their true selves," he shares, highlighting the importance of a relaxed yet results-driven atmosphere.
Yahoo UK, while part of a global company, operates with a "startup mentality" in the EMEA region. McHenry explains, "We’re very much on the front foot with our partners and branding, making sure we land the right messages." He also emphasises how Yahoo's strategy has shifted from being "everything to everyone" to focusing on three core areas: content, ad tech, and performance-driven ROI.
Notably, Yahoo has embraced bold decisions, including the risky move of shutting down its Supply Side Platform (SSP) to double down on its Demand Side Platform (DSP), focusing efforts where it can truly excel. As McHenry puts it, "We gambled on three areas, and it's starting to resonate." Yahoo's ability to adapt and innovate is a testament to its resilience, which McHenry proudly reflects on after over a decade at the company.
